Smoke Detectors

When it comes to protecting your family it makes sense to be sure you know and meet the latest standards/recommendations.

Did you know?

  1. It is required by law that working smoke alarms must be present in each floor of a residence?
  2. Some manufactures recommend smoke detectors be replaced every 5 years.
  3. Fire departments recommend that batteries be replaced twice a year.
  4. Newer smoke debtors can incorporate CO (carbon monoxide) protection and are recommended by building code, to be present on each floor where sleeping quarters are present. This is a requirement for all new house construction.
  5. Smoke alarms should be placed within 10ft of sleeping areas (a requirement for new house construction).
  6. It is recommended that smoke detectors be tested monthly.
  7. Smoke alarms that are interconnected can provide an extra level of protection so that detection on one level can trigger an alarm on another levee, possibly providing extra time for evacuation.
  8. Combination hardwired (120v) with battery back-up provide on of the highest levels of protection. This, in combination with interconnection, provides some of the highest protection available at a reasonable price.
  9. New designs and technologies allow installation of detectors and alarms with wireless interconnectivity.
  10. Some newer designs have a built in "Hush" feature. This allows the silencing of the alarm for about 20 minutes in cases of nuisance tripping, such as when you burn the toast, or if it is over-sensitive when you are cooking. This allows interruption of the noise but not the protection. Different types and sensitivities are available for any situation so that you can have the latest in protection for your family.

So why make smoke detectors a priority for you and your family?

  1. Safety for life and property.
  2. It's the Law
